A message from our
President - Lorraine Burt
What a busy time we have had this year! The 10th Anniversary celebrations in Sydney are the first that come to mind. The comments that have come back are filled with nothing but praise. The concert at Paddington RSL on Sunday 30 August was first class and at the end of the concert we made Little Pattie our first PVA NSW Honorary member and she was delighted to accept.
On the evening of the following day there was the Anniversary Dinner. It was great to catch up with members from all over Australia and to hear their stories of spending the day exploring the city and harbour. The meal was delicious with many commenting on the choice of menu. We particularly enjoyed hearing from Robyn Creswell, PVA’s first President, walking all of us down PVA memory lane. Each of the foundation members received a wine glass with “Foundation Member” etched into it and all other members who attended also received a wine glass with “10th Anniversary” etched into it. It was certainly an event to remember for years to come.
Also in August I attended the Vietnam Veterans Day dinner in Grafton. I was the special guest and gave a speech on PVA’s accomplishments which was very well received and we were congratulated on PVA’s work in the veteran community by all present.
In September I attended the Vietnam Veteran Federation conference at Rooty Hill RSL. Narelle Bromhead, our National President, was the special guest and speaker at their dinner. Narelle addressed many of the things that PVA has achieved over the years and this resulted in invitations coming from VVF sub branches in Orange, Moruya and Wagga Wagga for us to come and address their members and their partners. This is a great opportunity for us to further spread the PVA message and to increase our membership. VVF Granville also offered us further assistance: the use of their meeting room to hold a meeting in Sydney and advised that they will send out invitations to their members so that their partners know about the event. They have also offered to send all their members advance notice of our meetings in the different areas we will be visiting in the New Year. We’re very grateful for their offers and have expressed our thanks for their support.
On 14 October, secretary Noelene and I attended a meeting at Lismore concerningthe Review of DVA-funded ESO Advocacy and Welfare Services. This related to not only the BEST Scheme but also Veteran and Community Grants, Grants-in-Aid and the TIP training scheme and PVA NSW will make a submission to the review panel. We were very pleased to have the opportunity to speak to Jennifer Collins, the new Deputy Commissioner for NSW and ACT. During the meeting Repatriation Commissioner Brig. Bill Rolfe AO (Retd), who is leading the review, spoke about the untapped resources that every ESO should be looking to - the wives of veterans. We took the opportunity to advise the meeting that this is us – the PVA.
I attended the inaugural meeting of the NSW ESO Round Table held in Sydney in early November and bought many items to the table concerning members needs.
The NSW AGM was held at Tweed Heads on November 14, with Gail MacDonell as our guest speaker. It was a great day and lovely to catch up with those members who attended.
Yours in Unity
Lorraine
